Body Image

I am going to use my own family for this example. Growing up in home where I had two older sisters and a single mother, life was a little different. As we got into our middle school and high school years, body image and weight came to the surface just like every household. During those years, our bodies totally transformed, and all of sudden we had boobs and thighs on us. I am so glad that my sisters and I were not too obsessive over our weight and I praise my mother and grandmother who were really encouraging and positive about body image for it. Not to say we did not speak negative things about our body, but it was never a conflictive issue to where it became a stressful environment. However, this may sound a little wierd considering the fact that a single parent remains to be correlated with negative body image. My mother loves to cook and she would cook healthy meals for us and teach us a healthy lifestyle such as excercise, spiritual relationships, and meditation. Although we would make comments like "My boobs are saggy" or "why do my thighs have to look like cottage cheese?", My mother as well as grandmother, who are some go getters, taught us to push away any negative thoughts regarding our body, and got us in the mindset of knowing we only have one body, and it is so crucial to take care of it inside and out. I am so grateful for the support my sisters and I got. I believe that family and support is extremely important for any type of situation. Low income in the household, a certain family member with an eating disorder, or lacking relationships in a family tend to trigger negative body image. Honestly, who is completely 100% satisfied with their own body? No one. We are human and our own worst enemey when it comes to critizing our body. There is a saying "beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder." It rings all the more true. Yes, we are going to have some dimples on our thighs. Yes, we might no like the way our hair looks. Yes, we may really dislike the way a shirt fits and not like our body for it. But honesty, we have got to rock the body we have and embrace it and know that the inside is what really matters. The Beatles sing "Let It Be." Really, we all just need to Let It Be, and if we are not happy with it, we can change it. That is the beautiful thing about being human.
